In The Spotlight: Tzire

Thanks for submitting your questions to Tzire! Although, we would have loved to forward all of your questions to him, we decided to pick 6 questions, which we thought most interesting from the butch and got Tzire to answer them! We hope his answers would have clarified some of your doubts. Check if your question(s) have been answer below!

Q: What inspire your lyrics?
A: Umm, I do raps on issues I feel strongly about, like the adelyn hosehbo or SMRT incidents. I don’t necessarily have an inspiration all the time. Most of the time, I just write rap when I’m bored, or even when I’m feeling down.

Q: Are they any youtube stars that you look up to? (can be from either the local or international scene)
A: Yeah! George Watsky, Tiffany Alvord, and D-Pryde to name a few. The rapper i look up to most is of course Eminem, i mean, he is the King of Rap after all. And if i one day i could accomplish just 50% of what he has accomplished in his life, i would already be very, very satisfied.

Q: Will you perhaps, do a rap in chinese?
A: Yeah definitely! But i'll leave that for next time. For now, i'm just gonna keep on working on my English rap skills haha.

Q: What do you think of the Singapore music industry?
A: Honestly, i think it's a really poor industry. Cos there are seriously a lot talented musicians in Singapore, but because they're based here, they don't get the recognition that they deserve and would have gotten had they been in other countries like Australia, or the US. Even the musicians that have made it locally find it really hard to get on to the next level, the international stage, and that's because nobody really takes Singapore's music industry seriously. Of course, this is just my opinion, so it may be false, but from what i see, Singapore's music industry isn't an ideal one for an aspiring musician.

Q: Do you plan to take rapping seriously? Perhaps making it your career in the future?
A:Yup that's what i hope to do. If i could make a career out of music or rapping, it would be a dream come true to me. My life would then be complete.

Q: As you might have heard Justin Bieber's new number, boyfriend (he actually did a small section of rap). What do you think of it?
A:Well, if i were looking at it from a rapper's point of view, then it's in reality a very lousy rap. You can ask any decent rapper, that small section of rap was nothing much. Probably 90% of rappers in the US could have free-styled that verse. But since that song wasn't a hardcore rap song, and people nowadays are so easily impressed by 1-syllable rhymes, then it actually is quite a good rap. Adding on, Justin Bieber isn't even a rapper, he's a singer, and an awesome singer at that. The fact that he could rap it out so well is already pretty great. Of course, who am i to judge him haha. He's Justin Bieber... The most famous artiste in the world right now...

Thank you, Tzire, for making this entry possible!

A: Most of us started from football, then slowly music came into the picture.

Q: Can you guys play real soccer?
A: Yes, come and try us :D

Q: How is it similar/ different performing in Singapore compared to overseas?
A: A big difference compared to the European countries, as most of the countries we've been to have a strong love for football. And when we perform, they just go crazy.

Q: Are  your families supportive of what you do?
A: Yes, all of us have much support from our family members. They even try to help us out, giving us fresh ideas.

Q: How often do you guys train/rehearse? Where do you guys train/ rehearse?
A: We meet up about 3-4 times a week, and usually if we can get a studio we will use it. If not we will just use any open space.

Q: Have you guys met with any nasty experiences while performing on the streets?
A: Not nasty, but the worst thing is people walking across our performing area while we are performing

Q: What made yall wanna do this?
A: Because it is interesting, new and has no limits when it comes to creativity.

Q: What inspired you guys to play?
A: Since most of us have football background, we see a lot of nice and fancy tricks around. Thus we wanted to know more about it.

Q: Do you guys have any trainer or do you guys cheorography your own routines?
A: The only reference we have is Youtube, but most of it comes from ourselves.

Thank you, Urban Street Team, for making this entry possible!

MING BRIDGES

Some believe talents are a gift from God, if that is so, God must have loads of favour on this girl. Not only is she a pretty face, but she acts, models, dances, sings, and even write songs.

Ming has since become an accomplished Vocal performer in Singapore with Public Performances including the opening and theme song for the Mens (U21) Hockey World Cup, New year party at Marina Barrage and performances at Esplanade etc.

DARYL AIDEN YOW

Can you tell me what passion is? Or what love is? Well, let me tell you... Daryl Aiden Yow!

Having the ‘hots’ for singing at a very young age of 3, Daryl has been practicing and doing what he loves ever since. Despite having no musical background, Daryl fought the odds and well, let’s just say he is doing pretty well now. Even without anyone but himself to learn from, he managed gain popularity with his voice when he started a Youtube channel in 2009. He released his new cover of “Safe and Sound” recently and to no surprise at all, he received an overwhelming response from the viewers.

Here it is:

With the unconditional love and support from Daryl’s family and friends, he stepped to a new level in his singing career. Now, Daryl performs on stages like St James PowerHouse etc.
Daryl does this as a form of his love for music and singing. He didn’t let reality bring him down. And that my friends, is what true passion and love is.

MELODY TAN

Fashion is also a form of art. Your body becomes the canvas; you add colours, tones and textures with the clothes and accessories you don. Melody is perhaps one of the most reputable fashion blogger in the local scene. My first visit to her blog lasted an entire hour, I trawled through her archives, ogling at her perfect ensemble of outfits. What else can I say? Her pictures are stunning! (Definitely, magazine editorial material!) Just like her style, her blog has a very clean layout, which I personally find very appealing. Up till today, her blog, http://www.missingavenue.com/ remains as one of my top visited sites!

ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHY - JODIE POH

When digital photography ruled the current photography scene and images are constantly buffed up in
Photoshop, the beauty in using film becomes more prominent.

Today we feature a local talent, JODIE POH! Ever since secondary two, she brings her analogue cameras wherever she goes. It all started when her God sister bought a SuperSampler camera for her as a gift. From then on, her collection of cameras increased gradually. But most of the times when I see her around, she’s with her Diana Mini!

Making the mundane things around Singapore interesting through film is tricky. But her photos of her outing with friends and events had a little more kick to it as the pictures are splashed with coloured flashes or multiple exposure shots.

However, shooting film is not exactly a smooth hobby. Developing the film and buying the film in the first place requires a regular dedication of saving up money. Jodie had problems herself as her mother was not exactly supportive of her interests, saying that it was too costly. But then again, look at where she is now!

Film photography is a dying art form that our generation should try out. Why not just pick up a disposable camera and see how 36 frames can warp the way you shoot pictures. A little warning, it’s an extremely addictive hobby :>

TZIRE

Today, with the aid of social media platforms, a whole new tidal wave of budding musicians has taken over our world by a storm. Song covers are constantly flooding popular video streaming platform, Youtube. Armed with their video recording devices, they are unstoppable. Some have made it big (yes, Mr. Bieber had humble beginnings as a youtuber); scoring recording deals with global music labels while others…let’s just say they prefer the comfort of their own bedroom.

Born in the year 1997, Toh Yifan better known by his stage name Tzire, is the new kid on the block to look out for. He made his explosive appearance into the local rapping scene with a self-written “motivational rap”. His rap on “hosebo” (I shall refresh your memory, remember the controversial incident where 15 year old teen slapped her mother?) garnered him overnight fame. He dishes out justice through his reflective self-written lyrics in a bona fide American accent.

The young boy touches on topics close to home, making it relatable for fellow Singaporeans. The achievements he has pocketed also include the National Environmental Agency’s (NEA)

Most recently, Tzire accompanied by another of our homegrown youtube sensation, Sam Driscoll open the Youtube Stars concert held right here on our little dot near the equator. With only 26 videos, the aspiring rapper has a whopping 3,445 subscribers and a total of 576,236 views (last checked on 18 May).

So, what do you say, our very own “eminem’?

URBAN STREET TEAM

SOCCER! What was the first thing that pops in your head? 22 sweaty men chasing a ball? Well, most of y’all would think that Soccer = Friendly matches or competition. How about a form of art?

ust

Well, these bunch of soccer enthusiast have made the unthinkable, possible. They have revolutionized soccer into freestyle soccer, where juggling and ball control is taken into another level. Urban Street Team (UST) is the name they go by, as they travel around the world such as Seoul, Mexico city and Berlin, spreading their unique talent. UST was only formed in May 2009 and is the ONLY freestyle soccer crew in Singapore.

ust 2 us3

These freestylers had to practice hard, rain or shine, UST made sure they were well prepared to give their audience the best. Due to their hard work, UST became known to many even in the overseas.

us 4

Being young and innovative, they ventured out of the normal soccer mindset. They performed in an international theatrical play, “Football Football”. This has been performed in several parts of the world such as Bosnia, Singapore and South Africa (during the 2010 World Cup). How cool is that?? The aim of these freestylers is to promote the Art of freestyle football, and showing people that when it comes to art, there are no boundaries. These freestylers prove to us that art has no right or wrong. Taking soccer and making it into an art form shows how flexible and adaptive art can be. Well, to simply put it: “ When football becomes art”.
